In brief
Corporate carsharing means that several employees share company vehicles according to the carsharing model. It goes beyond conventional pool vehicle management when vehicles can also be used outside working hours.
How does it differ from pool vehicle management?
Pool vehicle management organizes business trips. Corporate carsharing also brings elements of public carsharing into the company fleet: booking by app, digital vehicle access without handing over keys, billing by the minute, and often the option to use vehicles privately in the evenings or at weekends.
What does private use offer?
It increases vehicle utilization at times when the vehicles would otherwise be idle and makes the fleet a benefit for employees. For companies whose vehicles spend a lot of time parked, this can reduce the number of vehicles needed.
Private use must, however, be assessed for tax purposes, and the distinction between private and business trips must be documented without gaps. The tax treatment in individual cases should be clarified with a tax adviser before launch.
What should be considered when introducing it?
Technical access is rarely the problem; the rules are. Booking rights, priority for business trips, late returns, refueling and charge levels, and how costs are shared for private use all need to be settled.
Municipalities and energy suppliers often also want to make vehicles available to third parties or local residents. This is possible, but shifts the issue from fleet organization to operating a mobility service, with corresponding insurance and billing requirements.
