In brief
The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive requires companies that meet specified size criteria to report on sustainability under common European standards. Fleets contribute emissions and energy-use data.
What is the directive about?
Sustainability information is to be reported and audited under common standards, making it comparable to financial information. This includes greenhouse gas emissions in defined categories and a description of targets and measures.
Which companies are affected?
A phased introduction based on company size was envisaged, beginning with large listed companies. The scope and timetable have been revised several times at European level, including how the rules apply to smaller companies.
Check the current position before planning the work. Regardless of direct reporting obligations, many companies already request this data from suppliers, so fleets may receive the same request indirectly.
What should a fleet prepare?
Complete annual energy quantities, with fuel and charging electricity clearly separated and their sources documented. Vehicles should also be assigned to the emissions categories under Scopes 1, 2 and 3, using a documented method.
With that foundation, the fleet can respond to requests whatever their reporting framework. Without it, the data has to be reconstructed under time pressure, when missing home-charging data may become apparent.
