Live Data

Vehicle data sent continuously to a system without manual entry.

Reading time: 2 minutes

In brief

Live data is vehicle data continually transmitted from a vehicle to a management system, such as mileage, location, and charge level. It replaces the need to ask drivers for this information manually.

Which values matter to a fleet?

Mileage as the basis for maintenance deadlines, lease billing, and consumption calculations. Location for dispatching and recovering pool vehicles. The battery charge or fuel level for deployment planning. For electric vehicles, range and battery condition also matter.

What changes compared with manual collection?

Above all, how current the data is. Mileage readings requested once a quarter are already out of date when analyzed, and some responses are missing. Maintenance intervals are then estimated, and deviations from agreed lease mileage only become apparent late, when they are difficult to correct.

Continuously transmitted values also reveal patterns that a quarterly request would miss, such as a vehicle with unusually high mileage or one that has not moved for weeks.

What matters when using the data?

Selectivity. A system that sends every available value generates volumes of data that no one analyzes while also increasing the burden of justifying collection under data protection law. It makes sense to start with a few values that serve a specific task and integrate them into existing processes.

The legal requirements are the same as for telematics: a defined purpose, transparency for drivers, and involvement of the works council where one exists.
